The Academy of 21st Century Learning encourages children to develop an attitude of inquiry and respect for their natural and physical environment. Science is integrated into the daily classroom life. Children investigate, manipulate,discuss, record and predict based on their observations on trips or classroom work. They explore how organisms change over time, cause-and-effect relationships and relationships between form and function.

Academy Enrichment Program


“Doing science” fits the ways children learn: by exploring, repeating, and communicating through hands-on, multi-sensory activities. Language, literacy, and mathematics flow naturally from our youngest students as they learn about their world through hands-on science. This learning is as fundamental to their early childhood years as learning to walk, talk, and interact with others.  At The Academy of 21st Century Learning, children build a rich knowledge-base that supports further learning and higher-order thinking 

skills like classification and drawing inferences. 


Examples of what your child will learn and experience in 2017:


Measurement and Mapping

The lessons are designed to acclimate children to the classroom, their classmates, and daily activities. At the same time, the lessons engage the children in carrying out scientific processes such as measuring, observing, describing, predicting, drawing, graphing and charting.

Learning to Measure

These lessons provide children with opportunities to learn about weight, length, and volume using both standard and non-standard measures. A focus on Goldilocks and the Three Bears includes a variety of literacy-based activities while involving children in graphing, using measuring cups, and exploring the relative nature of the concepts small, medium, and large.


Color and Light

This section introduces children to the concepts of primary and secondary colors. Activities included in the Color and Light Unit provide direct experience in the scientific process of replication. Children learn that mixing yellow and blue paint, yellow and blue water, or yellow and blue playdough consistently produces a green product. Mixing colors also provides an opportunity to explore the concepts of proportion and comparison – less yellow and more blue produces a darker shade of green than combining more yellow and less blue.

Light, Shadows, and Reflections

These lessons provide a variety of ways for children to investigate and talk about the properties of light. They will also learn how it interacts with other objects such as translucent, transparent, and opaque materials, shiny and dull surfaces, things that block light, and so forth.

 

How Things Move

Physics is the primary focus of the two units in this module.  How Things Move provides lessons that address how people and objects move.  Dancing, swinging, spinning, rolling, pulling, pushing, tossing, jumping, and dropping are some of the movements investigated. Concepts include energy, gravity, starting, and stopping. 

 

Simple Machines

Students learn how people use objects as machines to help them do work. They explore a variety of tools including ramps, pulleys, wheels, gears, pan balances, and see-saws. Concepts that are addressed include balancing, friction, lifting, pulling, and pushing.
