Math: “Why do I have to learn this?” Nearly every middle school student has uttered these words about math at some point. Our tutors at The Academy make a point to show how math is integrated into our everyday lives.  Even if that doesn’t persuade your student to put more effort into math, our fun and innovative approach certainly will. We have many creative solutions whether your student thinks they hate math or are just struggling with a particular concept.

“Science is a way of equipping yourself with the tools to interpret what happens in front of you.”

– Neil deGrasse Tyson - strophysicist, passionate crusader for space exploration, and eloquent champion of the whimsy of the cosmos

Science: Middle school students encounter scientific concepts with a new level of complexity. Your student may have learned about cells, motion, earth history in elementary school, but they will explore these topics with new depth in 7th and 8th grade.  Students will be introduced (or re-introduced) to biology, ecology, genetics, chemistry, physics, and earth science in preparation for the more challenging classes they will encounter in high school.  We will follow your student’s curriculum to aid them in gaining the basic knowledge that they will build upon over the next several years.

Reading & Writing: Students will improve their comprehension and analytical skills by reading a variety of different pieces. We will integrate scientific articles with short stories, essays, and other types of writing to enhance their versatility and ability to recognize key ideas. They will also gain the ability to organize their thoughts on and ideas about these works into writing.
Social Science: The social sciences are recorded examples of the people, countries, and conflicts of our world.  Here at The Academy, our social science tutoring aligns with both the California and Common Core standards. Because we place a large emphasis on this criterion, students will be able to analyze and determine key ideas and details to find the meaning and reason for these events: historical, social, and cultural.  They will also be able to cite specific textual evidence from both primary and secondary sources as well as be able to identify key steps and processes in history (e.g., how a bill becomes a law, how interest rates are raised or lowered)

STEM:

(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects are an enrichment component within The Academy. Projects are an interdisciplinary approach to learning which removes the traditional barriers separating the four disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math and integrates them into real world, rigorous and relevant learning experiences for students.

Students’ natural interests in science and engineering blossom through both real-world engineering design problems and hands-on inquiry. The activities and assessments promote higher-order, critical thinking skills that will result in improved student performance.
